Rutgers First Luce Scholar Becomes Its First Mitchell Scholar Too!

Matthew Cortland in Taipei, TaiwanMatthew Cortland, a 2011 Rutgers graduate from Marlton, New Jersey, was one of 12 students named to the 2015 class of George J. Mitchell Scholars. Nationally, nearly 300 candidates were nominated for the Mitchell Scholarship, which supports a year of graduate study in Ireland or Northern Ireland. Cortland will study Mobile, Tablet, and Dynamic Web Design at the Dublin Institute of Technology. This year’s Mitchell Scholars also include students from Stanford, Penn, Columbia, Duke, Notre Dame, Swarthmore, North Carolina, and California-Berkeley. For the past two years Cortland has worked with Teach for America in Miami, Florida, where he also earned a master’s degree in education and social change at the University of Miami. In June he began an internship as a Luce Scholar in Taipei, Taiwan. Only 18 Luce Scholars are selected nationally each year.
